A medium-size dog with a large dog personality
First of all, all LeMitri's corgis are DM-free, meaning they will not get the disease. Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a genetic, incurable, fatal disease that affects the spinal cord in Corgis, leading to full paralysis of back legs, affecting walking, scratching, going potty etc. It typically affects older Corgis at the age of 9 or older. In the beginning, the disease is manageable with the use of a dog wheelchair. This is so common that the term "Corgi on Wheels" has become very popular, leading to online communities and websites dedicated to affected dogs. All LeMitri's Pembroke Welsh Corgis are genetically tested to make sure that none of our puppies will be affected by Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). All our pups are "Clear by Parentage", and we provide you with a copy of genetic testing results so that you have peace of mind. Learn about it more in our "Corgi DM and its implications" article.
Corgis are prone to obesity, which can lead to various health problems, especially in the warm climate of Austin where they may be less active during the hottest parts of the day. To prevent obesity, it is important to provide your corgi with a balanced and nutritious diet that is appropriate for their age and activity level. Avoid overfeeding your corgi and giving them table scraps, which can contribute to excessive weight gain. Regular exercise is also crucial to maintaining your corgi's weight and overall health. Taking your corgi for daily walks and providing them with toys and games to play with can help keep them active and engaged. Regular veterinary check-ups can also help identify and prevent obesity in your corgi. By providing a healthy diet and regular exercise, you can prevent obesity and ensure a happy and healthy life for your corgi in Austin.
Corgis are known for their double coat, which sheds heavily and requires regular maintenance, especially in the warm climate of Austin. Regular brushing is essential for removing loose hair, preventing matting, and keeping your corgi's coat shiny and healthy. Bathing your corgi every few months using a gentle dog shampoo can also help reduce shedding. Trimming their nails regularly, cleaning their ears, and brushing their teeth will also help maintain their overall health and hygiene. Consulting with a veterinarian can help determine the best grooming routine for your corgi and keep them looking and feeling great in the hot Austin climate.
