A medium-size dog with a large dog personality
First of all, all LeMitri's corgis are DM-free, meaning they will not get the disease. Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a genetic, incurable, fatal disease that affects the spinal cord in Corgis, leading to full paralysis of back legs, affecting walking, scratching, going potty etc. It typically affects older Corgis at the age of 9 or older. In the beginning, the disease is manageable with the use of a dog wheelchair. This is so common that the term "Corgi on Wheels" has become very popular, leading to online communities and websites dedicated to affected dogs. All LeMitri's Pembroke Welsh Corgis are genetically tested to make sure that none of our puppies will be affected by Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). All our pups are "Clear by Parentage", and we provide you with a copy of genetic testing results so that you have peace of mind. Learn about it more in our "Corgi DM and its implications" article.
A well-balanced diet is important for maintaining a corgi's health and energy, especially in the hot climate of Dallas. Corgis require high-quality dog food that is rich in protein and essential nutrients to keep their muscles strong and their energy levels high. The appropriate portion size for your corgi should be determined based on their age, size, and activity level. Fresh water should always be available to keep your corgi hydrated, especially during the hot summer months when they may be more active. Consulting with a veterinarian can help determine the best diet for your corgi and ensure they stay healthy and happy in the vibrant city of Dallas. Overfeeding is a common problem among corgis, which can lead to obesity, joint problems, and other health issues. It's important to avoid giving your corgi too many treats or table scraps, and to ensure they are eating the right portion size of high-quality dog food that meets their nutritional needs. Overfeeding your corgi can also lead to digestive problems and discomfort, as well as an increased risk of certain health conditions. Regular exercise, along with a healthy and balanced diet, is important to maintain your corgi's weight and overall health.
Corgis have a thick double coat that requires regular maintenance to keep it healthy and reduce shedding, especially in the warm climate of Dallas. Regular brushing and grooming is necessary to remove loose hair, prevent matting, and maintain a shiny coat. Bathing your corgi every few months with a gentle dog shampoo can also help reduce shedding. Trimming their nails, cleaning their ears, and brushing their teeth will also help maintain their overall health and hygiene. With proper coat maintenance and grooming, you can help keep your corgi looking and feeling great in the Dallas heat.
