Is a Corgi Right for You?
From Couch Potato to Endurance Runner in a Blink of an Eye

While corgis are known for their laid back personalities, it's important to note that they are also high-energy dogs that require daily exercise to stay healthy and happy. In Fort Worth, there are many opportunities to get out and explore the city with your corgi, whether it's hiking in nearby parks or taking a stroll through the neighborhood. Daily playtime and regular exercise can help prevent destructive behaviors and obesity, both of which can be common in corgis that don't get enough physical activity. With their outgoing personalities and love of play, corgis can be a great motivator for staying active and exploring all that Fort Worth has to offer.

What is Degenerative Myelopathy (DM)?
Avoid the DM Trap

First of all, all LeMitri's corgis are DM-free, meaning they will not get the disease. Degenerative Myelopathy (DM) is a genetic, incurable, fatal disease that affects the spinal cord in Corgis, leading to full paralysis of back legs, affecting walking, scratching, going potty etc. It typically affects older Corgis at the age of 9 or older. In the beginning, the disease is manageable with the use of a dog wheelchair. This is so common that the term "Corgi on Wheels" has become very popular, leading to online communities and websites dedicated to affected dogs. All LeMitri's Pembroke Welsh Corgis are genetically tested to make sure that none of our puppies will be affected by Degenerative Myelopathy (DM). All our pups are "Clear by Parentage", and we provide you with a copy of genetic testing results so that you have peace of mind. Learn about it more in our "Corgi DM and its implications" article.

Diet

In Fort Worth, it's important to pay close attention to how your corgi is eating. While corgis are known for their hearty appetites, overfeeding can quickly lead to obesity and other health problems. Feeding your corgi a balanced diet that includes high-quality protein, whole grains, and plenty of fresh fruits and vegetables can help maintain their health and energy levels. Additionally, it's important to monitor your corgi's food intake and adjust portion sizes as necessary to prevent overeating. With the right diet and portion control, your corgi can enjoy all the tasty cuisine that Fort Worth has to offer while maintaining a healthy weight and lifestyle.

Maintenance

Maintaining a corgi's coat and grooming routine in Fort Worth is crucial to keep them looking and feeling their best. With the hot and humid climate, corgis can be prone to shedding and matting, which can lead to skin irritation and discomfort. Regular brushing and bathing can help keep their coat healthy and shiny while also reducing shedding. In addition, scheduling regular visits with a professional groomer can help keep their nails trimmed and their coat trimmed to prevent matting and tangling. By keeping up with their grooming routine, you can help your corgi stay comfortable and healthy, no matter the weather in Fort Worth.
